AVASH / DESIGN & INSTALLATION
Factory and industrial paging systems
Factory paging must deliver the right message to the right area. Machinery noise, tall production halls, building separation and cable infrastructure influence the solution. AVASH assesses announcements, music and operator control around the site’s organisation.
Industrial paging design principles
Networked and analogue industrial paging
A 100 V line distributes amplified audio through cable and transformers. Networked systems move audio between compatible devices over a data network, with central or distributed amplification. Dante transports digital audio; paging zones, destination selection and microphone priorities still require control and processing. Analogue systems can also support zones and priorities. A hybrid backbone with local 100 V distribution may suit an existing factory.
Equipment for a factory paging design
The matrix and controller define announcement and programme routes. Amplifiers must match the line voltage or impedance, load and rack ventilation. Horn-loaded transducers may suit production halls and yards; ceiling or surface units may suit offices. Check product-specific temperature, ingress protection, connectors and service access. A larger wattage rating or an industrial label alone does not establish speech clarity or environmental suitability.
Noise, speech clarity and placement
Measure background noise under representative operating conditions and at occupied positions. Intelligibility depends on distance, aiming, reflections and interaction between sources, not level alone. SPL and distance estimates start the design; device limits, zone needs and commissioning measurements complete it. Several appropriately located sources may serve a tall hall better than a single high-power source.
Cabling and operator control
Document buildings, rack locations, cable routes and expansion needs before procurement. Check tap totals and cable losses on analogue lines. For networked audio, design link capacity, traffic handling, switching, timing and power around the manufacturers’ requirements. Provide an operating and fault-finding plan; an existing office network should be assessed before being used for audio.
IP / Dante and 100V distribution
| Criterion | IP / Dante | 100V line |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission | Audio over an engineered IP network; Dante is a transport technology. | Amplified audio over dedicated line cabling. |
| Zoning | Routing and priorities depend on the controller, matrix and configuration. | Multiple zones are possible using suitable amplifiers, selectors or matrices. |
| Infrastructure | Check switches, bandwidth, power, latency and network redundancy. | Check transformer taps, cable loss, isolation and line capacity. |
| Selection | Useful where flexible routing and network integration are required. | Useful for distributed paging and music; assess each project individually. |
Hybrid systems can combine these approaches. Neither transport alone guarantees intelligibility or emergency-system compliance.
Questions before starting
How are factory paging zones defined?
Define zones by building, workflow, noise conditions and audience. Document sources, programme levels and priorities for each zone rather than grouping only by area or transducer count.
How much power is needed in a noisy hall?
Rated wattage alone is insufficient. Assess ambient noise, sensitivity, distance, aiming and reflections. SPL calculations provide an initial estimate; assess intelligibility and final settings on site.
Does Dante alone provide paging priorities?
No. Dante transports digital audio. Zone selection, announcement handling, priorities and operator control require suitable hardware and software.
What information is needed for a design and estimate?
Provide plans, building and rack distances, existing routes, noise and exposure conditions, zone counts, sources and installation constraints. These establish what can be reused and how alternatives compare.
