Shopping-centre and retail audio systems

Audio quality in a shopping centre or retail chain is about more than loudness. It depends on the customer’s listening experience and reliable paging infrastructure. Background music should feel continuous, announcements should be intelligible and staff should be able to change everyday audio scenarios without complex adjustments.

Engineering audio for shopping centres

Engineering coverage in multistorey shopping centres

A multistorey mall requires a different approach from a simple public space. Glass, stone, polished floors and high ceilings can increase late reflections and reverberation, reducing speech intelligibility. Adding transducers alone is insufficient: coverage geometry, aiming and room acoustics must be considered together.

  • Calculate dispersion using the distance from the transducer mounting plane to the listener’s ear plane, alongside the selected model’s frequency-dependent coverage.
  • Select aimable, surface or pendant transducers to suit exposed ceilings, listener positions and architectural constraints.
  • Apply time alignment where coverage overlaps to manage arrival-time differences; this does not replace reflection control and correct placement.
  • Assess speech intelligibility through STI or an appropriate commissioning test; a geometric calculation alone does not establish STI.

Zoning, matrix routing and everyday control

Entrances, floor corridors, parking, food courts, supermarkets and service areas have different audio needs. Design defines source routing, announcement priorities and operator permissions. The following options are assessed against the project’s scale and infrastructure:

  • A digital audio matrix for source routing and paging priorities, with music ducking or announcement override.
  • Dante networked audio and AES67 where supported, reducing long analogue signal runs and supporting expansion through appropriate network and cable design.
  • Wall or touch controllers with clear Persian interfaces, matched to equipment capabilities and each operator’s permissions.

Fire-alarm integration and voice evacuation requirements

Where emergency voice evacuation is required, integration with the fire-alarm control panel must form part of a coordinated, approved safety design. Scenarios may include muting music and broadcasting priority messages by zone and required language. Connecting an ordinary matrix to a fire panel is not sufficient: equipment, path monitoring, backup power, installation infrastructure and acceptance testing must meet project requirements. Where EN 54 is specified, relevant parts include EN 54-16 for control equipment, EN 54-24 for transducers and EN 54-4 for power supplies.

From design to operation: three AVASH installations

These three shopping-centre projects document actual AVASH installations. Scope and equipment descriptions follow each project’s recorded information.

  • Sana Shopping Center, Andarzgoo Boulevard: 411 ceiling and surface transducers across 24 independent zones, with centralised source routing and area control.
  • Hamila Shopping Center, Poonak: audio integration for the 1,700 m² food court and three adjoining terraces, using 63 transducers coordinated with the high ceilings and architecture.
  • Modern Center, Yaftabad: 75 transducers across six retail and four parking floors, with architecturally coordinated coverage, central audio management and custom Persian-language control panels.

From a single store to a multistorey complex

A single store may prioritise simple control and discreet equipment. Larger complexes also need organised signal distribution, racks and service access. Equipment choices should follow that operational brief and allow practical future changes.

Audio design for beauty salons and clinics

Reception, waiting areas and treatment rooms in beauty salons or clinics do not necessarily need the same music level. Equipment noise, listener positions and independent zone controls inform transducer placement. Discreet hardware should coordinate with lighting, mirrors and ceiling details. Before selecting equipment for your own space, define the room layout and permissible mounting positions.

Questions before starting

Can paging operate while music is playing?

Yes, with suitable equipment and priority logic. Activating a paging microphone can lower or mute music in the selected zone, then restore it after the announcement. Final intelligibility also depends on placement, ambient noise and system tuning.

Which transducers suit exposed ceilings?

Pendant, aimable surface or controlled-coverage transducers may be suitable, depending on mounting height, listener positions, dispersion and music or speech requirements. A horn-loaded design is not automatically suitable for every music application; its response and coverage must be assessed.

What determines the cost of shopping-centre audio?

Zone area and height, coverage-based transducer count, cable length and cross-section, distribution method, processing, controls, installation stages and safety requirements affect cost. Where voice evacuation is required, relevant certified equipment, backup power and acceptance tests also enter the estimate.
